When I was much younger, I suddenly developed an affection for dolls and it was one of the most baffling things in my family at the time. Why, you ask? I was well past the age when children usually play with dolls and as a child, I had never shown any desire to play with dolls.
So everyone, my mother especially, was baffled.
The first time I asked for a doll, I remember that she said no, with this look of bewilderment in her eyes. She could not understand and neither did I.
All I knew was that suddenly, I found it interesting to comb hair and stare at a doll. (By the way, I don't even like touching my own hair or other people's hair. So you can understand why it was super weird, this sudden interest in styling the hair of dolls)
Now every time I look back on this, it is with a smile, the sort that is accompanied by a shaking of the head.
Now, if you wonder how this will help you learn to read 100 books in a year. It won't. It's just a story that nostalgia brought my way today and I thought I would share it.
I will say this though: it is never too early or too late to form a habit, especially a healthy reading habit. And I'll be here to help you through it.
Here's a few ideas on how you can read a lot of books this year.
Set a goal.
For example, my headline reads a thousand books this year. That could be your goal.
Or you could set a more realistic goal like I will, say a 100 or 150 books this year.

Get comfortable.
I like making my reading fun. Sometimes, I brew a cup of tea. Or I get a blanket and swaddle myself in it. If you are the sort who likes to highlight, you may get a pretty highlighting pen and beautiful sticky notes to write down quotes that catch your heart.
Recruit others to join you.
If you would like to keep yourself accountable, you could ask others to join you on your reading quest. I, for example, have a friend that reads a book with me every month. It's new but it's interesting especially since I have delved into books I would not ordinarily reach for because of this.
It is never too early or too late to form a habit, especially a healthy reading habit.
Read.
This may be stating the obvious but you need to read. You could pick a time during the day when you are reading or you could just carry a book everywhere with you and when you are idle, whip it out!
That is what I do!

Celebrate!
So maybe you did not meet your target for the month or you fell short a little, that is fine. Celebrate. It is great that you have at least stepped into the waters and are on your way.

Anyway, here's my take on how to read 1000,500, any number of books in a year. If you would like some suggestions, send me a message and I could email you a list of books you could try out. I will be doing a review of some of the books I read every month. You could join me.
If you are wondering how the story about my affection for dolls ends, there is nothing to say really. I soon outgrew it and moved on to more interesting hobbies. Needless to say, this is not an important point. Especially since we are both hoping you don't outgrow your reading habit. Right?
What are some of your favorite tips that have helped you read a lot? Or do you have a really quirky story of habits you had as a child? Do share, I’d be delighted to read them.

Hi Boomubelo. Thank you for this! I agree - it really is beautiful holding a book in your hands. I will send an email containing the list to you.
Hello Bunmi.
I like you. And I see myself in you in so many ways. There is really something about holding a book. And reading is just about my favourite thing to do. I would love to get an email from you about your list. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
Hi Pelumi. I can understand the appeal of e-books. All you have to do is whip out your phone, yes. But there is something about holding a book in your hands, I think. I have never really been able to explain it. Also, the partner idea? Solid gold. Especially if the book is one that is very stimulating to discuss.
Hi, I found the bit on getting a partner to maybe read some books with and be accountable with insightful. I think I've leaned to ebooks in recent years because I had this habit of reading late into the night with a torch and my mum was worried I was going to ruin my eyes. I can also carry 15 ebooks around with me 😁
